| | HISTORYSudbury Dragon Boat FestivalSince its inception in 2000 the Sudbury Dragon Boat Festival has celebrated ten successful years of great dragon boat racing, a 2,000 year-old Chinese tradition. The two founding groups are the Sudbury Canoe Club and the Chinese Heritage Association of Northern Ontario. The community of Sudbury has fostered this tradition to the extent that 984 local and out-of-town teams have participated in the festival over the last ten years, including Team Chiro, which represented Sudbury at the World Club Crew Championships. An important component of the festival is the endorsement of local charities; this year the charity of choice is the Banque d'ailments Sudbury Food Bank. Though this is a valued component of the festival, the core mandate encompasses increasing the awareness of cultural heritage, a fun-filled day of activities and entertainment, promotion of dragon boat racing and corporate team-building. All of these elements contribute to community spirit and tourism in Sudbury. We hope to see you in 2010, the Year of the Tiger! |
